Hillbrow is the inner city residential neighbourhood of Johannesburg; known for its dense, multicultural and vibrant population along with unemployment, poverty and crime.
Situated in an old children’s hospital on the border of Hillbrow and Braamfontein, the pre-school started in 2008. We currently have 50 children between the ages of 3 and 6 that are receiving quality education, nutritious meals, support and care. Two teachers and two support staff are employed at this site.
Curriculum focused teaching fills the morning, whilst an aftercare program runs for the remainder of the day. The children at Philile Hillbrow are from a variety of communities both in the immediate locality and wider afield. Travelling to town from areas such as Soweto with parents who work in the inner city they use trains, taxis and buses to get to school. About half of the children speak English, making for a transient, diverse and exciting group to work with.
Sindie has been working at Philile Hilbrow since it started. She has completed the Play-With-A- Purpose training, has started the child-care course and is excited to teach. She loves working with children and embraces the mixture of cultures that come to the school. Sindie currently lives in Alex.
