Philile Hillbrow

why Philile exists

Situated in an old children's hospital on the border of Hillbrow; the pre-school started in 2008 and has provided early childhood development for over 120 children. We are able to enrol +/-50 children between the ages of 3 and 6 that receive quality education, nutritious meals, support and care. Curriculum focused teaching fills the morning, whilst an aftercare program runs for the remainder of the day.

The children at Philile Hillbrow are from a variety of communities both in the immediate locality and wider afield. Travelling to town from areas such as Soweto with parents who work in the inner city they use trains, taxis and buses to get to school. About half of the children speak English, making for a transient, diverse and exciting group to work with.

One of our Hillbrow teachers has completed the Play With A Purpose training and our second is mid way through the course.

  Lauren

Lauren

“I’m originally from Cape Town and have been teaching for about 12 years now. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was 8. I saw the ad for Philile about four years ago, and thought wow, that’s sounds exciting, and I’d love to be a part of it. I applied and got the job, and moved up to Joburg from Cape Town. Teaching has always been my passions and now to see women being trained up in it is very exciting.  To see them grow as well as the children is a very exciting part of what we are doing with Philile”.

Lauren is the Principle of Philile and overseas the staff and operations at Diepsloot and Hillbrow.
